An ultra-rare and autographed manuscript by Albert Einstein, dated 1929 and explaining the beauty of the Theory of Relativity, is set to go up for auction during an event organized by Christie’s in Shanghai later this month, marking the tenth anniversary of this prestigious auction.

Originally commissioned by The New York Times and published in a supplement on February 3, 1929, this manuscript represents Einstein’s attempt to explain the complex theories of special and general relativity to the general public.
The growing public interest in his innovative theories convinced Einstein to share his ideas through this 14-page manuscript, written in German. In addition to explanations, the manuscript features two equations and a diagram illustrating the structure of space-time.
It also contains two full pages of scientific formulas, and on the blank reverse side, you can find Einstein’s name and address in Berlin: 5 Haberlandstrasse.

Due to the historical connections between Einstein and Shanghai, along with the growing interest of Chinese collectors in scientific artifacts, the choice of Shanghai as the location for this auction is especially significant.
It is expected that global collectors and science enthusiasts will be drawn to this remarkable piece of history, which is intrinsically linked to Einstein’s pioneering contributions.
The manuscript will be auctioned during the event “10th Anniversary of the Shanghai Auction: 20th/21st Century Art Night Sale,” taking place on September 23 at the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai.
